Representation of Gender: Luther

In Luther, binary opposition is used to show the power males stereotypically have over females, this is shown when Luther is shown looking down at Alice to represent a sign of power and dominance. Yet through a point of view shot from Luther's perspective shows us how Alice doesn't seem intimidated and she appears to be rather bold. This is unstereotypical as females are generally seen to be weak and need protecting so this means Alice defeats this stereotype.

We are first presented to the characters through shallow focus to tell the audience these two are the main focus in this scene. There also isn't the non-diegetic sound of music until later on in the clip which suggests this is an important conversation and there shouldn't be any distractions. This could also be shown through Luther's actions as when Alice shows signs of affection, he turns away. Stereotypically men use women for sex so here we see a gender reversal as it seems to be Alice who wants it whereas Luther does not. Through the use of turning away this suggests the conversation is important and Luther doesn't want to be distracted by affection from Alice.

Through the use of mise-en-scene, we're shown that Alice appears to be wearing makeup which suggests she wants to look good for Luther. The general representation for women is that they want to look good for their partner as they feel their appearance is more attractive so this shows that Alice wants to attract Luther. Although she fits this stereotype, in her apartment we are shown she has a lot of books which suggests that she is intelligent and would have a wide knowledge. Stereotypically women are seen as dumb and don't undersigned what's going on yet Alice knows exactly what's happening and will talk back to Luther giving her opinion on the situation.

As the conversation between Alice and Luther progresses, the shot-reverse-shots between them gradually get more fast paced which show the rise in tension and how they have to think quicker about their responses. Overall this shows both Luther and Alice fit yet are different for the stereotype of gender as Alice is sexualised and Luther is dominant but Alice seems to be smart yet Luther appears to not respond to her sexualised actions.

The Male Gaze- Gansta music video- by Kehlani

The Male Gaze is used in the music video of Gansta by Kehlani which is from the film Suicide Squad and it shows the dominance and power The Joker has over the females. This shows  how although it focuses on more females in this music video, the males still seems to have control over them. This could be seen as degrading as the video does present women in a sexual manner but their clothing isn't that inappropriate. But Harley Quinn presents herself in an inappropriate way by doing very sexual dancing such as pole dancing and dancing on The Joker. This demonstrates the sexual relationship between men and women and we can see The Male Gaze being physically used by The Joker. This is degrading as it shows her dancing is the only reason he's communicating with her.

In the music video, we're introduced to Kehlani who is lying on the floor in a suggestive way but is wearing appropriate clothing still and is surrounded by glass and has a baseball bat. This suggests she's trying to present herself in a rebellious way. At 12 seconds, we see a girl hanging upside down in a cage which presents women in a weak way as we see she's in a very bad state. This suggests someone as been very violent and forceful to her to get her into this position. But, the cage is surrounded by barbed wire which could suggest she's either dangerous, smart or powerful which isn't the stereotypical viewpoint of a female.

Kehlani is shown wearing rings which is very typical of a female to be wearing jewellery yet we can see she has tattoos which generally males typically have. At 42 seconds, we're introduced to The Joker and through a over the shoulder shot, we see him touching another females lips in a very suggestive way. It also shows us looking at her in a high angle which suggests the idea that she's weaker than him and he has power over her.

At 1 minute, we are shown a girl in water wearing very suggestive clothing and it suggests she's drowning. This is also shown with red lighting and smoke which is very alluring as red is the colour for love and lust. We're not really shown the girls face which again suggest to the audience the main focus on this girl is her body which again is very degrading.

At 1 minute 12 seconds, The Joker gives a female a very lustful look and as the focus is on the female at the time, she doesn't seem to respond to this and almost appears afraid. Following on from this, The Joker pulls a girl out of a hot liquid at 1 minute 24 seconds which suggests he was trying to drown her. The way he lifts her out of this shows how he has the dominant role in this situation.

We are now shown some very provocative dancing at 1 minute 51 seconds and The Joker makes it very clear he's enjoying it. Following on from this, she physically dances on him in a very sexual manner at 2 minutes 6 seconds but it does appear she has control over what she's doing which shows she wasn't forced. They're surrounded by a big group of people which suggests women are only used for sex and entertainment.

But at 2 minutes 21 seconds, the same girl who was doing provocative dancing is shown wearing lots of clothes and is reading a book. She appears to not be trying to impress anyone which shows she's been de-sexualised which is a large contrast to how she was before.

Representation in Our Girl

In the scene cross cutting is used to show show what's happening inside and outside of the ambulance while using fast paced editing to demonstrate how fast the ambulance is moving. This builds tension while the non diegetic sound of music gradually gets louder to show how powerful and tense the situation is.  Low angles are used to portray how Georgie is the victim as we are shown a point of view shot of her looking up at the terrorist which shows how he has power over her.

Georgie is presented as the victim by her screaming and being obviously scared of the terrorists as they deliberately intimidate her by threatening her. This is also shown by the terrorists moving Georgie by pulling her by her hair and the audience are shown she gets an injury on her cheek. This stereotypically shows us the power and dominance the male terrorists have over Georgie.

The synchronous sound of gunshots is used while using a cross cut to show the effect the gunshots are having on the soldiers. This continues over a sound bridge while we're shown the point of view shot from the angle of the terrorists to show the injuries they're inflicting. As this is happening, the music gets very loud and over powering which represent how powerful the terrorists are in this situation.

Costume is used to show how the terrorists are hiding their identity which tell us how they understand they're committing a crime yet still continue anyway. Georgie isn't in the general army uniform instead she's in scrubs as she is the doctor on the ambulance which stereotypically shows how the female generally looks after the male. This isn't a very stereotypical outfit to be wearing as it's more practical than fashionable which suggests to the audience she doesn't care about how she looks.

Representation- UK Tribes

I took a survey on http://www.uktribes.com/uncategorized/find-your-tribe and I found out I was a Townie which means I love hanging out with my friends and going to the pub. I think I belong to this group as I can be very social due to extra curricular activities and I do love going out to meet friends very much. I did this survey around January this year when I had to find out what tribe I was in for my GCSE work and I was a Townie then as well. This shows that my personality has not changed in this space of time.

I don't copy celebrities but there are a few that I relate to in their sense of humour, fashion sense and moral beliefs. An example of this is is is Willow Shields as although I wouldn't say I see myself in her I love her sense of style and I'll sometimes look to buy similar items. I also love Jennifer Lawrence's sense of humour.

I feel that if I do copy celebrities it isn't intentional, for example if I have the same fashion taste as a certain celebrity or like the same song as them. This shows how seeing celebrities on the internet might subconsciously affect our actions which shows the effect media can have on society.
